Veera Panova, an art student from Scripps Ranch High School, will have her 3D art piece featured in the Student Craft 2014: Useful Forms exhibit at the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park. The exhibit is the Mingei’s first juried student exhibition inspired by the museum’s name. “Mingei” is Japanese for “art of the people” or handmade objects with a function such as bowls, furniture and clothing.

Veera’s piece, titled “Recycled Materials Basket” is constructed from ribbons, plastic bags, t-shirts, yarn and rope. “All of these materials are very common and if used in the right way, beautiful and unique baskets can be created,” Veera shared in her artist statement. The exhibit opens on May 3, with free admission between 3 and 5 p.m., and closes on June 1. Head to for museum
