Scripps Ranch High School junior Ashley Lo is hosting a blanket drive to help homeless children and their families in the San Ysidro School District. According to a local news article Ashley came across, roughly 33 percent of the 4,500 students in the San Ysidro School District are homeless. Many are “transitional homeless,” which means they live in cars, trailers, motels, and even junkyards. Many families are also undocumented, have been forced out of the country, and cross the border every morning so their children can attend school. In the winter especially, these families have a critical need for shelter and other necessities.

Community members can donate new blankets at the Scripps Ranch Library between Nov. 6 and 20. On Nov. 19, the Scripps Ranch Farmers Market will serve as a drop-off site as well.
