Room for Grace

Jody and Steve Luke met while fundraising and volunteering for Young Life, and that spirit of service has stayed as strong as their relationship in the 17 years since. Now, they’re keeping up with a busy lifestyle in Hunters Pointe. Steve has been an NBC7 weekend morning anchor and weekday reporter for 15 years, winning multiple Emmy Awards and covering national news stories, Super Bowls, and the Olympics in Torino, London, Sochi, and Rio de Janeiro. Jody founded her own business 13 years ago – Mass Street Accounting – and is part of the management teams for small businesses and nonprofits, including Butterfly Effect, Phokus Research Group, and Love Does.

Their three kids stay on the move too. Thirteen-year-old Annalee attends Marshall Middle School. She’s involved with club soccer, tennis, Girl Scouts, and Oasis, and she also babysits and plans craft camps for extra pocket money. “She is our responsible, adventurous firstborn,” said Jody. Her brother, Tyler, is 11 and in fifth grade at Jerabek Elementary, and enjoys club soccer and little league. Jody shared, “He says he would never get in trouble if he didn’t have sisters. The jury is still out!” The youngest, Lauren, is eight years old and in second grade at Jerabek. She plays soccer like her siblings, and is also involved with Brownies and musical theater. “She is our hugger, peacemaker, and optimist,” Jody said.

Jody and Steve still support Young Life, and they’re part of Canyon Spring Church. Jody is Lauren’s room mom and treasurer for the Jerabek FFO. She also hosts an annual brunch for 75 local moms – it’s a chance to celebrate and empower. Steve is media ambassador for the National MS Society and a board member for the Poway/Scripps Ranch Young Life Committee.

With everything going on, there’s still time to enjoy their Hunters Pointe neighborhood. “It would be fair to say it feels more like family, and that’s the general feeling with our whole cul-de-sac that regularly gets together and looks after each other,” Jody explained. “We love our neighbors, and we get to walk through beautiful canyons daily on our way to school and sports activities at Jerabek Park.”
The Luke family keeps their focus on loving God and loving people. “With three kids and all the activities and work and life, there’s rarely a ‘perfect’ day,” concluded Jody. “But we have come to see our life as beautifully messy, with room for lots of grace.”
