HOTE Offers Innovative Workshops and Summer Technology Camps for Elementary and Middle-School Students: Empowering and Inspiring Technology Built by Youth

Does your child have an enthusiasm for technology? If your answer is “yes,” then Mobile Technology programs, put on by Hands-On Technology Education (HOTE), could be just what you’re looking for. “Our model is the first of its kind to design a cohesive Mobile Technology program with an emphasis on Computer Science and Electrical Engineering theory and practical applications,” said Dr. Korey Sewell, owner of Hands-On Technology. “Our mission is to provide educational objectives, opportunities, and activities that are tailored specifically for elementary and middle-school age students.”

HOTE has expanded the reach of their signature summer camps by now featuring Second Saturday Workshops across San Diego County in North Park, UTC, and Oceanside, and an exclusive workshop, Arduino Electronics for Kids, in Scripps Ranch on June 10. Summer camps are targeted for students in grades three through six and are primarily offered in two-week sessions between June 26 and Aug. 4, at three different San Diego locations: Carmel Valley, Serra Mesa, and La Jolla. “Our Summer Camps add more in-depth Computer Science objectives, along with Electrical Engineering inspired projects (e.g. circuit design), and dedicated time to increase typing proficiency,” explained Dr. Lauren Nicole Keyes, Hands-On Technology Camp Director. “Our program empowers and inspires technology built by youth who are gaining access and gaining confidence to compete in a high-tech world before entering high school.”

“Our model is the first of its kind to design a cohesive mobile technology program with an emphasis on Computer Science and Electrical Engineering theory and practical applications.”

The camp offers two types of sessions: Introduction to Mobile Technology (100-level) and Intermediate Coding & Circuits (200-level). The comprehensive curriculum supports and challenges each camper based on their levels of knowledge and experience while still letting them have fun. “It’s summer, and the camps are just as much about enjoying that, making new friends, and being exposed to technology with excitement,” added Dr. Sewell. In the Introduction and Intermediate Mobile Technology sessions, children create cool projects involving tablets, Android apps, coding with Arduino, electrical circuits, and video games. Fundamental engagement is essential – and present every day with outdoor activities, Mobile Tech Olympics, Career Days with local Engineers and Programmers, Field Trips to San Diego’s Fab Lab, San Diego’s MakerPlace, and more. Special Camp Events and Themed Days add to the variety.

Each camp session concludes with a student showcase, giving campers the opportunity to showcase all that they’ve learned to their family or friends in attendance. “Campers are always so proud of their accomplishments – and rightfully so. What they do and achieve in these camps is a pretty big deal,” said Dr. Keyes.

Since its inception, Hands-On Technology has received community praise. In 2015, the company received local recognition from CBS News for its community outreach efforts. Last year, the company received national attention as California Assemblyman Brian Maienschein recognized the company’s positive impact on the San Diego community. In 2016, HOTE also received National Recognition in ‘Careers with Code’ for their efforts and successes promoting youth access in computer science and electrical engineering from Google.

handsontech2

The praise is well-deserved. In addition to being camp director, Dr. Keyes is also the Founder of Be The Change International, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing domestic and international human rights issues. Hands-On Technology and Be The Change connect to make the San Diego Kids For Technology Project (SDMT4K) – a collaborative initiative to assist with various support services, including camp scholarships that promote STEM access to underserved populations in San Diego. “Hands-On Technology is committed to access and empowering youth with theory and hands-on applications of STEM,” said Dr. Sewell. “We’re committed to remaining San Diego County’s premier technology education source for rising elementary and middle school age students.”

Outpost Summer Camps

outpost_logoNow more than ever, children need to be away from their devices for extended periods of time, and there is nothing better than a summer day-camp experience to make this a reality. Outpost Summer Camps was founded in 2001 and serves over 1,500 children every summer, completely outdoors and screen-free.

The Outpost experience has three pillars that parents have loved for over 15 summers: door-to-door transportation, traditional camp activities (think MUD!), and exceptional, well-trained staff that ensure a quality experience for each child.

Outpost is open to children ages 3 to 14, and according to Owner/Director Stuart Jones, “Each of our camps has exciting, age-appropriate activities for the different age groups, but all share in the philosophy of creative, spontaneous fun facilitated by the counselors and campers.”
Their three-week sessions are what make Outpost so unique. Stuart explained, “By staying longer at camp, children of all temperaments have enough time to learn names, get completely comfortable with routines, and make and keep new friends.”

Another way the camps stand out is with their commitment to safety. Outpost Summer Camps has been continuously accredited by the American Camp Association since inception and operates as a licensed, organized San Diego camp.

Stuart and his wife Kelly both have graduate degrees in psychology and bring years of long-term child development experience to Outpost. Additionally, the duo hires, trains, and retains their director team from their best counselors, who have invested 8 to 10 years at the camps and are specialized in their programs. Little Rookies & AllStar Baseball & Softball Summer Camps

littlerookies_logoLittle Rookies and AllStar Baseball and Softball camps offer boys and girls ages 4 to 12 the ultimate training environment. Baseball and softball programs are divided into age and skill divisions for the best individual experience. The Little Rookies division serves ages 4 to 6, and AllStar Baseball and Softball serves ages 7 to 12. Full-day, half-day, and extended options are available to fit any family schedule at locations throughout San Diego.

“My goal is for each player to first have an enjoyable experience, learn all the great fundamentals of the game the right way, and round themselves out to become the complete player by playing in a live game each day,” said Coach Kurtis Swanberg, owner of Little Rookies.

Young players learn the fundamentals with state-of-the-art equipment – hitting and throwing nets, baseball and softball pitching machines, portable pitching mounds, a 60 by 15-foot batting cage, and more. Every afternoon is a chance to put those fundamentals into practice with daily live games.

The team spirit and camaraderie solidify the experience. “The players and families look forward to summer camp every year, and it’s a big reunion of players, friends, families, and coaches,” said Coach Kurtis. “It’s amazing to see the kids’ growth each summer as they move up in divisions.” As Brad Ausmus, Manager of the Detroit Tigers, put it, “Coach Kurtis teaches each student valuable fundamental work that connects them to the game and creates super confidence in all as they learn under him. They graduate from the clinics at a much higher level of ball.”

Country Montessori School

countrymontessori_logoThis summer, parents who want to give their children the opportunity to broaden their horizons need look no further than a local school. Country Montessori School, situated on a three-acre campus with extensive playground areas, will offer seven individually themed camp weeks with half-day and full-day options for ages 2.5 to 10 years.

“The teachers and staff were phenomenal. Each week my son came home with the cutest arts and crafts and paperwork about the camp topic. It says something that my son wanted me to pick him up as late as possible because he was having so much fun at camp. It is enjoyable to see your child learn in such a fun way and make new friends!” said Tracy Matula. Her son Dante added, “I liked that each week we learned about new topics. I am sure going to miss everyone, but I can’t wait for next summer.”

Camp topics range from Engineering to Sports Camp for the Elementary school-aged children and from Dr. Seuss to Sea Animals for the Early Childhood children. “All camps are led by CMS staff, and there is before- and after-camp childcare available” said Sheila Walker, Director of Admissions and Enrollment. Robolink Robotics Camp

robolink_logoEven with school out, your kids are going to be incredibly successful this summer. Why is that? At Robolink Robotics Camp, they’re going to learn how to build actual robots, pilot drones, and develop their programming skills. They will be lead by brilliant UC San Diego engineering majors who want to help raise the next generation of innovators.

With Robolink, campers will learn the magic of programming. They will use code to make motors move, navigate through mazes, orchestrate robot battles, and move propellers to make flight happen. Your young genius will learn to work with nuts and bolts, screws and drivers, circuit boards, electrical wires, and more. They will collaborate with other brilliant students to solve challenges and obstacle courses, learn teamwork and problem solving. At the end of it all, they’ll finish with a capstone project where they build their own robot or compete in a sweet tournament.

Robolink wants your kids to be successful. They have been a leading STEM center (science, technology, engineering, and math) in San Diego for five years. Their high-tech learning center is in the heart of Sorrento Valley and 4S Ranch, fully equipped with WiFi, robots, drones, circuit boards, and all kinds of gadgets and gizmos that will no-doubt engage and enthrall campers of all ages and skills.
So, come spend a week with Robolink — or stay longer! Either way, it’s going to be awesome. To learn more call 858-876-5123 or visit www.robolink.com.

Therapeutic Literacy Center

tlc_logoEnd the homework battle. Is your child average to above average intelligence but not reaching their potential? Is your child taking too much time doing homework that should take only a few minutes? This can be changed. There are solutions. This summer is the time to make that happen before repeating the same pattern next school year.

tlc1“When learning is difficult or homework is a battlefield, then there may be an unidentified weakness in one or more of the underlying learning skills,” stated Maria Bagby, Executive Director of the Therapeutic Literacy Center (TLC), an organization renowned for its intensive therapeutic approach to fixing learning problems. “That can change. We do that every day.”
TLC does much more than literacy. They have become renowned for the results they get with fixing the challenges related to ADHD, auditory processing deficits, executive function, as well as reading and writing skills. These problems don’t fix themselves.

How does it work? TLC plans everything they do to meet each individual need through one-on-one therapeutic programming and through small group offerings when appropriate.
Why not take advantage of the summer months to change the patterns of last year? Students can raise themselves to grade level reading, master their math facts, and improve their handwriting and writing skills. These skills are necessary, not only for success in the increasingly complexity of the Common Core curriculum, but also for life!

Use this summer to change your child’s future. Visit www.therapeuticliteracycenter.com or call 858-481-2200 to see how TLC can help.
