Scripps Ranch High School junior Amira Walia and Ramona High School junior Taylor Cole recently received $3,500 college scholarships from Students Stand #withMalala. The scholarship competition was open to Girl Scouts San Diego members in 11th and 12th grade. To qualify to win, Amira and Taylor earned Global Action Awards by hosting screenings of the movie He Named Me Malala and leading projects to create positive change in their communities. Amira focused on addressing adversities faced by women pursuing STEM fields and other disciplines for her project. She set up monthly Career Corner Clubs meetings, where student could meet with female professionals to strategize about gender gaps in salaries and other obstacles. Taylor decided to help former foster care youth adjust to college life for her project.
